In the 19th century, cameo cutting was particularly popular in Europe and North America and there were many famous cameo cutters such as Giovanni Pichler, Benedetto

Pistrucci and Luigi Pichler, to name but a few.

Cameo carvers were highly respected craftsmen who specialized in the art of cameo carving.

Cameo carvings are elaborate carvings carved from a single shell to create a relief-like representation.

Cameo carvers mainly worked with precious stones such as sardonyx, carnelian, agate and shell or coral.

They created elaborate cameos with mythological or historical scenes as well as portraits.

This antique, high-quality cameo ring dates from the second half of the 19th century and is crafted in 14-karat yellow gold.

The ring setting is simple and has a gold cord band.

The elegant ring shoulders flank the ring head on both sides and are beautifully crafted as floral buttons.

The center of the antique ring is set with an oval-set shell cameo, portraying a lady's bust in side profile.

The lady was painstakingly carved out of the shell under a magnifying glass.

The shell probably originates from Italy and was later processed in Germany.

The antique ring is in very good condition with minor signs of wear due to age.
