The goddess Flora, which we see in fine detail on the present shell gem, was the mistress of plants,

she was known for her youthful beauty, recognizable by the luxuriant flowers in her hair.

In this depiction, Flora embodies the ideal of classical beauty.

Rendered in side profile, the goddess radiates a dignified beauty and roses adorn her curly hair .

The oval gem was probably created in the Bay of Naples - the region is known for its numerous Roman works of art,

which served as a model for the gem cutters.

A finely chased setting in gold rounds off the piece of jewelry perfectly.
